In 1999, Angela Katschke earned her degree in art therapy from a German University (HKS Ottersberg: Hochschule für Künste im Sozialen). She then worked for 10 years in Germany in psychiatric, psychosomatic, and psycho-therapeutic medicine with all age groups. Upon arriving in South Africa in 2009, Angela specialised in art therapy for traumatised children in vulnerable communities, establishing the Butterfly Art Project (BAP, www.butterflyartproject.org) which brings creativity and healing through art. Many local educators and artist wanted to know how art can be used to combat the mental health crises in children and youth they are facing. Angela developed the BAP training counting 11 training modules of 24h each and many, many relating workshops for Community Art Facilitator (CAFs). In 2023 BAP could count 313 CAFs working with 12,608 children bringing their art therapeutic skills into various communities all over South Africa. In April 2022 she handed over leadership of the Butterfly Art Project to find more time for consulting, training art therapeutic skills and coaching young leaders in organisational development. She has been visiting and working in many African countries. Her three passions are: Art when it heals, painting and travelling Africa to see other cultures, landscapes and people.
